Fraxel is a safe and gradual laser procedure that stimulates the body to replace aged and photodamaged skin. To date, there have been two categories of laser skin rejuvenation: ablative and nonablative. Ablative techniques resurface broad areas of the skin and can offer significant clinical improvement; however, they are associated with significant post-treatment recovery. On the other hand, nonablative techniques require virtually no downtime, but can be limited by inconsistent clinical improvements depending on the condition treated. The Fraxel laser is a novel device that can provide the positive results of ablative resurfacing using a non-invasive technique with little downtime.
How does fractional resurfacing with the Fraxel laser work? The Fraxel laser achieves its effects by a revolutionary new process called fractional resurfacing. Instead of treating the entire skin surface, it treats just a fractional percentage of the skin's surface, thereby allowing the natural ability of the skin to heal itself very quickly after treatment.
What types of conditions can be treated with the Fraxel? The Fraxel has been shown to be effective in the treatment of facial and nonfacial photodamage (wrinkles and discoloration). It is used for the treatment of acne scars on the face, chest and back. More recently, all evidence suggests an improvement in all types of scarring whether due to burns, or whether the scar is more red in appearance, or older and white. In addition, nonfacial areas with extensive keratoses and photodamage (arms, legs) may be improved with treatment.
Is Fraxel laser treatment uncomfortable? Some patients will experience discomfort during the treatment, therefore a topical anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure.
How many treatments will I need? The majority of patients will achieve satisfactory results with a series of 2-5 treatments. However, deep wrinkles (often seen around the mouth), may require additional treatments or use of an ablative laser. Fraxel treatments are typically performed every two weeks, but may be done either more or less frequently, depending on the condition.
Are there any side effects associated with Fraxel therapy? Patients may experience slight redness, peeling and swelling for 3-7 days after treatment. However, some patients may develop small raw areas that take longer to heal.
